Hi everyone. As you know, the outlook of Team Fortress Classic isn’t good. The game is mostly dead by now. We don’t have a server anymore, because our host went out of business – so we’re reviewing options on what to do to keep a community alive.
Personally, I’m wondering if we should look into new games to play with one another, and fall back on pickup games for older ones like TFC once in a while. We put a lot of blood, sweat, tears and heart into our server – and I don’t want it all to go to waste. At the same time, paying every month out of pocket for a server hardly anyone will play isn’t cost-effective. The only way I see us continuing a TFC server if we were to resort to a by-donation model – in other words, we all put some money as we can into a fund to run the server.
Otherwise, I think it makes sense to consider newer games that already have a living community. Pike, myself, Kirstie, and others already play Left4Dead2. It’s a game that we all enjoy, but only supports 4 or 8 player games. I highly recommend everyone try it out ASAP, because it’s free for this weekend, and only $5 to purchase. You get the content from both L4D1 and L4D2, and all the community-made content from both the Steam Workshops and http://www.l4dmaps.com
Another possibility is – well – TF2. I know none of us are big fans of the game. I, myself, am not still. I’ve played it some over the past month. I’d say maybe 5 or 6 games? Sometimes, they’re fun. At least 2 occassions – it was infuriating. Faint praise, I know. But it’s a free game, with a very active community already. If we were to create a server, I’d like to do it with a game at least as “alive” as TF2. My only thoughts regard just what we could do to make the game… well, better.
I’m requesting all of your opinions about the future of tA. What games have you been playing? Are there games out there you’ve wanted to find an excuse to play – or games you’ve wondered about that haven’t tried yet? If we moved onto something new, would you follow us?
